Dear Friends,
From time to time through the years we have received encouraging communications from Brazilians who identify themselves as our “sons in the faith.” Last month Gustavo sent us an e-mail. He was saved as an adolescent in our church back in the 90’s and announced at that time that he desired to become a pastor one day. In his e-mail Gustavo told us that he had been preaching in a four-night meeting and said:
“It’s sad when a preacher cannot see souls coming to Christ. I prayed, but there were no conversions. On the last day I thought, ‘Lord, do I not have the call to your work? Four days without a conversion’? … As John Knox asked God for Scotland, I asked God for one soul. I left the services on Saturday without having seen anyone respond to the invitation and I sadly thought that God does not want me in the ministry. ” (Gustavo reported that on the following Monday he was informed that three young people had placed their faith in Christ after he had left the services.)
Paulo César also called a few days ago with an invitation for me to preach at the organization of the church which he has pastored for several years. When Paulo professed faith in Christ over 25 years ago I had little confidence that he was sincere. However, God has used him to win the lost and to develop the church in the small town which had no believers when we began preaching the gospel there in the mid 80’s.
July is our “Red-Letter” month since it has several family birthdays and wedding anniversaries. Through the years it has also been one of our most active months for summer ministry and it was no different this year. Rena and I were in six churches in which I spoke seventeen times. Rena spoke in three ladies’ meetings. God seemed to especially bless a family conference in one church where some publicly expressed their desires for spiritual change in their family situations.
The next four months will be filled with our normal Bible Institute and church responsibilities with a couple conferences in distant cities included. If God permits, we will board the plane on December 6 to return to the US for normal furlough. Hope to see you soon. I can schedule meetings beginning in January 2012.
